Highlights

The River Piedras represents an exciting new area for the study of tropical biology. Piedras Biodiversity Station provides an ideal base for both long-term MSc and PhD studies or short term expeditions, undergraduate or amateur research projects. One of our principle aims is to understand tropical rainforest ecology and to use the knowledge gained from research to promote conservation and education, thereby making an active contribution towards a sustainable biosphere. In order to help achieve this we invite researchers and student groups to initiate and conduct fieldwork at our station. Our committed and knowledgeable staff will provide you with support and assistance both before and during your stay to ensure that your project runs as smoothly as possible thus enabling you to meet your research objectives.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1:
After meeting you at the airport we will make the short trip into the town of Puerto Maldonado, where there will be the opportunity to visit the market and learn about local produce and medicinal products from the rainforest. We will then leave the hustle and bustle of the town and the ‘gringo trail’ behind and begin the journey towards our remote rainforest destination, passing small farms and communities en route. Lunch will be provided. Be sure to have your camera and binoculars to hand, as the River Piedras has an abundance of wildlife to offer us on the way - Capybara, caiman, and monkeys as well as colourful toucans, herons, macaws and the fascinating Hoatzin to name but a few. We will stop on a beach or at a local farm late afternoon and set up camp. Whilst dining around our small camp fire we will be able to appreciate the myriad of stars above us and soak up the ambience and tranquility of the undisturbed forest at night.

Day 2:
Woken by the forest sounds we will break camp and continue our journey to the station arriving late morning. Upon arrival we will settle in and enjoy a refreshing shower before having lunch. After a short siesta we will hit the trails and immerse ourselves in the wonders of the forest and its inhabitants, learning first hand about flora, fauna and rainforest ecology. On the way back to the station we will pass through our organic farm to help gather food for the evening meal and gain insight into tropical farming practice. Darkness descends and a completely new world is revealed, as the activity of the forests nocturnal inhabitants begins. Night Monkeys – the only true nocturnal primate – feed from the trees around the station, and for the more adventurous a night walk will give you the best opportunity of observing some of this activity.

Day 3: This day is free to be spent quietly walking in the forest spotting some of the 628 species that inhabit this region. The open areas around the lodge and the farm are both excellent places for getting good views of birds that are often hard to spot inside the forest. The trails visit many different forest and habitat types offering the opportunity to see many different bird species. The day may be spent with or without a guide.

Day 4:The morning is free to walk in the forest or visit the macaw lick. In the afternoon we will leave the station and travel downriver again viewing the birds and riverside wildlife en route. Optional visit to an ox bow lake and we will overnight either at the lake or camp on the river bank.

Day 5:
Depending on flight schedules, an early start may be needed to continue downriver, and arrive at the airport in time for your onward flight.
